weetgreen, the wildly popular chain known for its build-your-own salads and grain bowls, is opening its fifth Houston-area location today at the M-K-T development in The Heights.
The restaurant, at 600 North Shepherd Drive, joins other locations Downtown, The Woodlands, Rice Village and the Montrose. It opens at 10:30 a.m. today and will be open daily until 10 p.m.
At the Heights location, diners can expect warm bowls like the chicken tostada, topped with baby spinach, quinoa, blackened chicken, and lime cilantro jalapeño vinaigrette; the vegetarian Shroomami, with warm wild rice, beets, portobellos, and miso sesame ginger dressing; and the garlic chili shrimp bowl with nuoc cham vinaigrette. Every dish is customizable, and diners can build their own bowls from a list of dozens of ingredients.
Sweetgreen first landed in Houston in the summer of 2019, with the Rice Village location. The chain, which was founded in D.C. in 2007, has been referred to as a “restaurant unicorn” thanks to its startup success, and the “ultimate millennial brand” due to its focus on sustainability, community service, and perceived authenticity.
Due to that popularity, Sweetgreen was originally known just as much for its long lines as it was for fresh, seasonal ingredients. The chain made changes in 2019 in an effort to eliminate the long lines, eliminating the assembly line-style ordering system in favor of kiosks where diners can order, plus lunching a custom app for ordering ahead of time. The Heights location will also an expansive patio that seats 50 people.
